Survey with the NGO – Outdoor School for Girls

The Outdoor School for Girls is a non-governmental organization dedicated to empowering young girls through outdoor education and experiential learning. In collaboration with students from New Horizon College of Engineering, we conducted a comprehensive survey to understand the interest and intends. The survey was carried out over three days: 10th, 11th, and 13th July 2024.

The main objectives were to identify the hobbies, extracurricular interests, and aspirations of girls aged 11-15 in government schools. To gauge the awareness and understanding of climate change among the respondents, to determine the respondents’ willingness to engage in climate-positive actions and their ideas for mitigating climate change and to identify the primary issues and challenges faced by girls in government schools, with a focus on education, health, and personal development.

The survey was conducted through structured questionnaires. The students of New Horizon College of Engineering visited various government schools and interacted with the girls in a safe and supportive environment. The questionnaire included multiple-choice to gather comprehensive data.

On Day 1 of the survey conducted at Karnataka Public School, Sarakki, the focus was on gathering opinions from the students of grades 5 and 6. A total of 56 students participated, each providing unique perspectives through a comprehensive questionnaire. The survey aimed to understand various aspects of their knowledge on the agronomy and the climate change. The diverse responses highlighted a wide range of views and experiences, reflecting the individuality of each student and providing valuable insights for future improvements.

On Day 2, a survey was conducted at Government High School and Primary School in Begur, involving a total of 35 students—20 from the high school and 15 from the primary school. The questionnaire focused on their interest in and knowledge of climate change, as well as their ideas on how they could contribute to mitigating its effects. The students displayed varying levels of awareness and understanding of climate change. This survey provided valuable insights into the students’ current awareness levels and their readiness to participate in environmental conservation efforts.

On Day 3, a survey was conducted at Karnataka Public School, Uttarahalli, targeting around 60 students to gather insights on their personal interests, environmental knowledge, and the actions they would choose to effect change. The questionnaire revealed a diverse range of opinions and interests among the students, reflecting their individuality and varied backgrounds. Many students demonstrated a solid understanding of environmental issues, with some expressing a particular interest. The survey underscored the students’ awareness and eagerness to contribute to environmental sustainability, highlighting the importance of nurturing these interests through educational programs and community involvement.

The surveys conducted over three days at various schools in Karnataka provided comprehensive insights into the students’ educational experiences, environmental awareness, and willingness to contribute to societal and environmental betterment. Collectively, these surveys emphasize the importance of fostering education that not only addresses academic needs but also encourages environmental consciousness and active participation in community betterment and sports.
