Stem Cells Registration Drive Organised by NSS Club in Collaboration with DKMS x BMST

Date: December 9, 2024.

Venue: Library, New Horizon College of Engineering.

Time: 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The NSS Club of New Horizon College of Engineering, in association with DKMS BMST, organized a highly successful Stem Cell Drive on December 9, 2024. The initiative aimed at spreading awareness about stem cell donation and encouraging students to register as potential life-savers for patients battling life-threatening blood disorders.

The Stem Cell Drive was conceptualized to address the global demand for stem cell donors. Patients suffering from conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma, and other severe genetic or blood disorders often rely on stem cell transplants for survival. However, finding a suitable donor is often a challenge due to the specific genetic matching required. The drive sought to bridge this gap by expanding the donor database and inspiring young individuals to step forward as potential donors.

The event witnessed an overwhelming response, with 464 students voluntarily participating. Each participant underwent a structured process that began with registration, where they provided their basic details. This was followed by a painless swab test conducted by trained representatives from DKMS BMST. The collected swab samples will be analysed to identify genetic markers, which are crucial in matching donors with patients requiring stem cell transplants.

In a gesture of gratitude, DKMS BMST distributed specially designed hand bands to all participants, symbolizing their commitment to saving lives. These bands served as a keepsake and a reminder of the participants’ role in this life-saving endeavour.

The success of the drive was largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of the NSS Club and a team of enthusiastic volunteers. The club undertook a range of responsibilities, from creating awareness about the event to ensuring its smooth execution. They organized pre-event campaigns, including poster displays, social media promotions, and information sessions, to educate students about the significance of stem cell donation.

On the day of the event, the volunteers worked tirelessly to manage registrations, assist participants during the swab collection process, and coordinate logistics with DKMS BMST representatives. Their teamwork and efficiency ensured that every participant had a seamless and hassle-free experience.

The Stem Cell Drive was more than just an event; it was a movement that resonated deeply with the student community. By registering as stem cell donors, the 464 participants became part of a global registry, significantly increasing the chances of patients finding a compatible match. The initiative not only empowered students to contribute to a life-saving cause but also fostered a sense of social responsibility and empathy among them.

This drive also highlighted the importance of youth involvement in addressing critical healthcare challenges. The proactive participation of the students demonstrated their willingness to contribute to the well-being of society and showcased their commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

The participants expressed their pride and satisfaction in being part of such a noble initiative. Here are some testimonials:

– “I had no idea how simple it was to register as a donor. Knowing that I could potentially save someone’s life is an incredible feeling,” said one of the students.

– “The event was well-organized, and the process was explained clearly. It feels good to contribute to something meaningful,” remarked another participant.

Such positive feedback reflects the success of the drive in creating a lasting impact on the participants.

The college administration, faculty, and participants appreciated the collaborative efforts of the NSS Club and DKMS BMST in organizing the drive. The event was acknowledged as a landmark initiative that aligned with the values of compassion and social responsibility promoted by New Horizon College of Engineering. The NSS Club’s dedication and DKMS BMST’s expertise were instrumental in ensuring the drive’s success.

The Stem Cell Drive was a resounding success, setting an inspiring example of teamwork, compassion, and service. It demonstrated the collective power of youth in addressing global health challenges and emphasized the importance of simple yet impactful initiatives.

Building on this success, the NSS Club and DKMS BMST plan to continue their collaboration and organize similar events in the future. Such initiatives not only expand the donor registry but also foster a culture of social consciousness and altruism among students.

The event truly served as a testament to the spirit of humanity and the willingness of individuals to come together for a greater cause, leaving a lasting legacy of hope and resilience.
