Description of the Event:

  • Appsylum : The Useless App Competition was organized to encourage creativity, quick thinking, and collaboration among participants. The event focused on ideation rather than technical development, allowing students to explore humorous, unconventional, and imaginative concepts in a structured yet engaging format. It provided a platform for participants to think beyond traditional app-building and express their creativity in a fun and interactive environment. Overall, the event was a lively, entertaining, and enriching experience for everyone involved.
  • The competition consisted of three phases: Chaos Kickoff, Hyperdrive Creation Brawl, and Sharkocalypse Pitch Showdown.

Chaos Kickoff (Phase 1) In the first phase, participants were introduced to the event through a series of engaging and humorous activities designed to stimulate creativity. The round began with a light-hearted icebreaker question to set a fun tone. Teams then drew Useless Superpower Cards, which assigned quirky creative constraints such as “Use funny accent during presentation” or “Add a random Object to your presentation.” This phase helped participants break the ice, think freely, and set the foundation for their imaginative app concepts.

Hyperdrive Creation Brawl (Phase 2)

  • In this phase, teams were given time to develop a complete concept for their useless app. They were required to prepare:
  • An app name and tagline
  • A creative app icon
  • One meme representing their idea
  • Integration of a random twist such “Time Increment” or “Time Decrement”
  • Participants collaborated actively, combining their assigned constraints with their chosen idea seed to form a coherent yet intentionally impractical app concept. This round emphasized teamwork, creativity, and adaptability while maintaining a humorous theme throughout.

Sharkocalypse Pitch Showdown (Phase 3)

  • In the final phase, teams presented their completed concepts in a fast-paced pitching format. Each team was given 2 minutes to showcase their meme, explain their app name and icon, describe the core idea, and highlight how they integrated the twist. Judges evaluated teams based on creativity, humor, presentation clarity, and how effectively they incorporated their constraints. This round allowed participants to demonstrate confidence, communication skills, and spontaneous thinking, bringing the event to an energetic and entertaining conclusion.
