AutoWorks

Category : ARTICLES

The Mechorizon Club, a Co-Curricular club of Department of Mechanical Engineering from New Horizon College of Engineering had conducted an event known as “AutoWorks” on 11-11-2022 in the Automobile Lab under the guidance of Mr. Kantraju, Lab Assistant in Automobile Department.

In this event the students had to dismantle and assemble all the parts of two and four stroke engine, at the same instance taking the measurements of the parts like piston, bore diameter, stroke length etc…. The main intension of this event was to help the students to get a hand on experience of the engine parts. Now,

What is an engine?

An engine is a machine that is designed to convert one or form or energy to mechanical energy.

An internal combustion engine is in which the ignition and combustion of fuel occurs within the engine itself. The engine then partially converts the energy from the combustion to work. The engine consists of a fixed cylinder and a moving piston. The expanding combustion gases push the piston, which in turn rotates the crankshaft. Ultimately, through a system of gears in the powertrain, this motion drives the vehicles wheels.

Mainly there are two types of engines

  • Petrol Engine
  • Diesel Engine

Most of these are four strokes where as some are two stroke engines.

Coming back to the event, it started at 10:00 am in the morning. First the students were briefed about the event by the coordinators, about its procedures and all the things that they are going to learn. Totally, there were 9 teams, 2 people per team. Students were enthusiastic to learn about the engines. Totally, there were 4 engines present in the Automobile lab. These engines were distributed between the students and a sheet was given to each team, so that they can note down the measurements.

All the students were given instructions about the instruments that are to be used while dismantling i.e., vernier calipers, spanner, screwdriver etc… and their different sizes that are to be used for different sizes of bolts and nuts.

Students started to explore the engine parts as soon as they were assigned to an engine. They learnt to use different tools and about the parts and their use in the engine.

For example, the function of connecting rod, that is, it connects the piston to the crankshaft to transfer combustion pressure. Here is some glimpse of the event that can be seen in these following pictures.

Once the students completed the dismantling and assembly of the engine, all the participants were given a demonstration of how a real engine works using working engine.

Then, all were addressed by the Dr. Shridhar Kurse, Professor & HoD of Department of Mechanical Engineering, and were encouraged to participate in such type of events and also to conduct such type of events on high scale, if possible, to get an excellent exposure. Finally, at the end all participants received the certificates by HOD, Prof. Vinay and Prof. Manjesh.
