Autonomous institutions are the institutions with their own set of rules, and these are the self-governed institutions. Autonomy exists in the field of education from decades. It was first given by the National Education Policy of 1992 and later amended by the Jnanam committee, appointed by the UGC.
There are 441 autonomous colleges in India. The count itself depicts the success rate of autonomous colleges over non-autonomous colleges. The admission process in these colleges is based on the score in the entrance examination. Every year more than 10 lakh students from all over the country give their best in the entrance examinations to get admission in autonomous colleges.
Autonomous colleges are granted freedom and in some or all the matters. They can have their own set of rules, syllabus, evaluation patterns, fees system etc. the status of an autonomous college is given on the basis of accreditation by National Council of assessment and Accreditation.
Reasons why it is better to study under autonomous colleges:
- Academic Freedom
The Autonomous Status accords an institution with the freedom to frame the syllabus and customize it as per the needs of the Industry. Students are taught the latest and relevant technologies to make them competent in the market.
- Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS)
Autonomous College of Engineering follows the ‘Choice Based Credit System’. CBCS has numerous advantages over the conventional system. Rather than evaluating student-performance using marks and percentages, which many a time can be very inconsistent and unfair, CBCS uses Grades and Grade Point Averages (GPA) to evaluate student-performance.
- Better Subject Choice and Electives
The earmarking feature of CBCS is that students in addition to studying the core subjects from their branch can also choose from a wide range of elective subjects from other branches as well. i.e students from non-circuit branches can opt for electives offered by the circuit branches and vice versa.
- Employability Becomes Easier
In today’s competitive marketplace, there is a huge demand for proficient technical and management professionals. Practical training and a curriculum meticulously framed to meet the requirements of the job market are imparted to the students to make them readily employable.
- Fast Track Semester & Examination
This facility is provided to assist slow-learners and students who have failed in one or more subjects to help them avoid losing a whole academic year. Fast Track classes are conducted and Examination is held at the end of each academic year.
- Placement process
Placement is not a point to be worried when it comes to autonomous colleges. There is an availability of on-campus jobs. MNC’s also look for recruitment in these type of colleges.
These are the benefits that make autonomous colleges a better choice over the non-autonomous colleges. One can experience all these benefits by taking admission in an independent university. But for getting admission in these colleges students have to work hard.
To get the best, you have to give your best!!
