The cultural extravaganza, SARGAM 2016, the annual state level inter-collegiate fest was organized by New Horizon Educational Institution on 10h and 11th of September 2016.
Day 1 of SARGAM turned out to be a huge success. The participants, students, faculty, and management who were part of the events at SARGAM 2016 enjoyed the fest alike and cheered on for all the events held at different venues in the New Horizon College of Engineering campus (NHCE) at Marathalli. More than 20,000 students from over 150 colleges across the state were present at SARGAM-2016 and around 2500 of them took part in various events this year.
The inauguration of SARGAM-2016 commenced with the official New Horizon SARGAM Military Anthem. The real war hero, Air Marshal Narayan Menon PVSM UYSM AVSM, graced the inauguration as the Chief Guest. Captain Naveen, a Kargil war hero, Group Captain Karunanidhi from Indian Air Force and the parents of Lt. Col. Niranjan , who became a martyr while fighting terrorists who attacked Pathankot Air Base, also graced the occasion. The other dignitaries on the dais were Dr.Mohan Manghnani, Chairman of NHEI and the Principals of New Horizon College of Engineering, New Horizon College-Marathahalli, New Horizon College-Kasturinagar and Ms. Sargam Manghnani, the chief coordinator of SARGAM. All the ‘real war heroes’ spoke about the spirit of military, great sacrifices done by our defense personnel and expressed that youngsters should join the armed forces as the country needs them. They also mentioned that the service in Military will transform ordinary individuals to extraordinary heroes. The presence of the war heroes and their speeches inspired the youngsters and stirred patriotic feelings among them and the entire campus echoed with the audience shouting Jai Hind and Bharat Mata Ki Jai. This was followed by the felicitations of Air Marshal Narayan Menon, Captain Naveen, Lt. Col. S.K.Kalia, and Group Captain.Karunanidhi. The parents of Lt. Col. Niranjan. were felicitated and a cheque of Rs. 2.5 Lakhs was presented to them as a token of respect by the Dr. Mohan Manghnani. The students who topped in various streams were presented appreciation certificates. The Chairman, Dr. Mohan Manghnani then handed over bouquets for all the sponsors of the fest for their support and contributions. The inaugural event was then followed by flagging off various events starting with Street Dance (Group), Switch Foot, Computer Gaming, Short Movie Making, Painting, Singing (Solo) and Battle of Bands.
The most exuberating event, “VEER VANDANA”, an initiative by New Horizon, to salute and felicitate 27 Veer Naris of the Indian Army, whose husbands became martyrs during various war operations by the Indian Army. As an earnest gesture to acknowledge the pain and hardships undertaken by the Veer Naris, New Horizon presented all the 27 Veer Naris and the parents of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan and Mrs. Bhandarkar with a cheque of Rs. 2.5 Lakhs each.
Major General Nijjar, GOC of Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area and Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar, Param Vir Chakra awardee graced the occasion as the chief guest and guest of honor, who addressed the gathering with great energy and enthusiasm. They shared their various experiences which inspired the students. The entire campus resounded with the applauding of the audience. The latter half of the evening witnessed the most awaited mega event of SARGAM, JAI HIND, which is a fusion of song, dance, action, drama, emotions, bravery, sacrifice and patriotism. It left the audience speechless and created an aura of patriotism.
Param vir chakra, the highest military award was given to Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar on the account of this great bravery during the kargil war. He was born on 3 March 1976 in the village Kalol Bakain in Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh. He did his schooling from the Govt. Sr. Secondary School, Kalol.
Sanjay Kumar volunteered to be the leading scout of the attacking column tasked to capture area Flat Top of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley on 4 July 1999. During the attack when the enemy opened fire and stalled the column, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar realizing the gravity of the situation and with utter disregard to his personal safety, charged at the enemy. In the ensuing hand-to-hand combat, he killed three of the intruders and was seriously injured. Despite his injuries, he charged again. Taken totally by surprise, the enemy left behind a Universal Machine Gun and started running.
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar picked up the UMG and killed the fleeing enemy. Although bleeding profusely, he refused to be evacuated. His brave action motivated his comrades and they took no notice of the treacherous terrain and charged onto the enemy and wrested the area Flat Top from the hands of the enemy. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar displayed most conspicuous gallantry, cool courage and an exceptional devotion to duty.
New Horizon felicitated the Param Vir Chakra awardee, Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar, for his contribution in the Kargil. The Chairman, Dr. Mohan Manghnani presented a cheque of Rs. 5 Lakhs to Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar as a token of respect. The other dignitaries, who graced the felicitation function, were Principals of New Horizon College of Engineering, New Horizon College-Marthalli, New Horizon College-Kasturinagar and SARGAM-2016 Chief Coordinator, Ms. Sargam Manghnani.
Highlights of NAIB SUBEDAR SANJAY KUMAR’S ADDRESS TO THE STUDENTS
Param Vir Chakra awardee, Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar addressed the students in a very exuberant way. He shared his Kargil war experiences and requested the students to come forward to join the Military as the country needs them. He even mentioned that working in Military gives a different perception towards life and will make them more disciplined. His words were sharp like bullets fired from a gun and students with bouncing energy screamed out saying JAI HIND.
The Day 2 of SARGAM, 11th September 2016 was kick started with the blockbuster event Filmy Dance (Group –Jr/Sr). This was followed by the other scintillating events like Singing (group), Computer gaming, Freeze iT, Collage, Turn Coat, Mime (group), and Contemporary Dance at various venues.
In a special program Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav PVC was felicitated and presented with a cheque of Rs. 5 lakhs. The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is India's highest military decoration awarded for the highest degree of valor or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy.
Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav is the youngest recipient of such high honor. Yogendra Singh Yadav was born on 10 May 1980 in Aurangabad Ahir village of Sikandrabad, Bulandshahr District, Uttar Pradesh. His father Karan Singh Yadav had served in the Kumaon Regiment, and participated in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistan wars.
Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav was part of the leading team of a Ghatak Platoon tasked to capture Tiger Hill on the night of 3/4 July 1999. The approach to the top was steep, snowbound and rocky. Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, volunteered to lead and fix the rope for his team to climb up. On seeing the team, the enemy opened intense artillery fire killing the Commander and two of his colleagues and the platoon got stalled. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav crawled up to the enemy position to silence it and in the process sustained multiple bullet injuries. Unmindful of his injuries, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav continued firing and killed four enemy soldiers in close combat and silenced the automatic fire. Inspired by his gallant act, the platoon charged on the other positions with renewed punch and captured Tiger Hill Top. Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav displayed the most conspicuous courage, indomitable gallantry, grit and determination under extreme adverse circumstances.
New Horizon deemed it as a proud privilege to felicitate the Param Vir Chakra awardee, Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav, who fought valiantly for the sake of the country. The Chairman, Dr. Mohan Manghnani presented a cheque of Rs. 5 Lakhs to Subedar Yogendra Singh as a token of respect. Highlights of SUBEDAR YOGENDRA SINGH’S ADDRESS TO THE STUDENTS
Param Vir Chakra Awardee Naib Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav addressed the students in a very inspiring and motivating way. He said that we all need to feel proud of our country which has gifted people of great courage and wisdom. He also opined that humans are the most beautiful creations in the world and we are born into this world with our fate already written, but we need to do the Karma we are supposed to. According to Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav, whatever we are is because of our brought-up and the values we receive from our family, school and teachers. He shared his views saying that the values he inherited from his family have driven him to join the Military and serve the country. He also said that it is very important to have self-control and indomitable will to conquer any sort of tougher consequences. He quoted Capt. Vikram Bhatra, “Either I will come back after hoisting the Tricolor (Indian flag), or I will come back wrapped in it, but I will be back for sure.” He further asked the technical students to be innovative to come up with some useful programs that would help the Indian soldiers in providing better security through software controlling. He concluded his energizing speech saying that our country has given us so much, so it’s our turn to repay what we have received with due respect, commitment, dedication, and sincerity.
The latter half of the evening witnessed the most awaited attraction – “SUNBURN CAMPUS” at NEW HORIZON, featuring the “Progressive Brothers”, who performed for the first time in Bengaluru. The groves, moves and the energy of the Progressive Brothers lured the audience and pumped them up with all the excitement anticipated.
The NEW HORIZON COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING received the prestigious ALL ROUNDER TROPHY for their awesome performances in the fest.
The two-day fest finally concluded on a grand note with slogans of patriotism sounding everywhere. The participants recalled that SARGAM means a lot to them and remarked saying that they love the flamboyance of the fest as it always attracts them with its variety of themes year after year.
